Leading bed and soft furnishing brands trust HALCO for their fastening solutions.
The average human sleeps for 8 hrs per day, spending one third of their life in bed so it makes sense to use only the finest materials to manufacture beds and bedroom furniture. Products such as HALCO's Sew On Hook & Loop tapes are often an integral part of the finished goods. These tapes provide the perfect fastener when sewn onto fabric and can be used instead of buttons, snaps and zippers.
The history of the bed is a story that began thousands of years ago, and it’s one that’s still developing today. In the beginning there was no such thing as a bed. In 10,000BC, primitive men and women would lie down on the cold, hard ground, with little more than leaves, straw or possibly an animal hide providing a rudimentary ‘mattress’. Sometimes, pits would be dug, if the ground was particularly soft, and these would be packed with grass and moss. The sleeper could then curl up inside and enjoy some protection from the elements.
In fact, it wasn’t until a few thousand years later that the first example of what you would consider a standard bed set-up (bed base, mattress and blanket) was discovered. In 1850, a great storm battered Orkney in Scotland, UK and unearthed a Neolithic village of eight dwellings named Skara Brae, inhabited sometime between 3200BC and 2200BC. In each dwelling sat a large stone slab bed, which would then have been topped with soft fern and animal skins.
From bedding down on the cold hard ground, to innovative mattresses that help regulate your temperature as you sleep, beds have come a long way. Today HALCO continue to bring specialist products to the market such as Plastic Hook Systems and Velour Loop as the bed continues to develop.
Did you know?...The largest bed in the world measures 26.5 m (86 ft 11 in) long, 16.44 m (53 ft 11 in) wide and was created by Commissie Zomerfeesten St Gregorius Hertme (Netherlands) in Hertme, the Netherlands, on 28 May 2011.
